At the Norway Chess 2025 tournament, Indian chess grandmaster Gukesh Dommaraju faced off against chess champion Magnus Carlsen and won.

Now, I’m not going to pretend that I understand the implications of that win. What I *do* understand is when someone is unhappy, and by God, was Carlsen not pleased with his loss.

In videos captured of the event, Carlsen is simultaneously furious and gentlemanly, pounding the table before shaking Gukesh’s hand and saying, “Oh, my God.” He also managed to pat Gukesh on the back before leaving — still, you can tell he’s pretty upset about what just went down.

Well played, Magnus. But everyone declines from their peak. It is now Gukesh who will rule the world of Chess, for hopefully years to come. And definitely in a much more humble, 'knowledge and genius are divine', Indian way.pic.twitter.com/syTA7eDB00
